If you are at all up on your current events, chances are good that you’ve heard of Gil Valle, the so-called cannibal cop. In Raw Deal, we get to meet the man himself. His childhood, his life, career and marriage. The whole man, not just the police officer with the twisted fantasies. Gil is not a man you’d probably care to know, simply because he is a strange character, but that’s what makes his story so compelling. He’s not asking you to be his friend and he knows he’s an oddball, which is why he hit the internet to find those with similar interests. It’s what has made the internet so great; our ability to connect with those we like and who like what we like. Gil’s likes, though, include dark fantasies about doing things to women that most might not agree to. But they are just thoughts.
I did see this story as it happened and, even then, I was completely outraged on his behalf. The fact is that getting to know Gil Valle through his memoir, Raw Deal, in no way changed my mind about his case. He was railroaded, screwed and received a mile-high pile of injustice and likely prosecutorial misconduct. He isn’t a likable man and this memoir doesn’t do much to help endear him to the average person, but the fact remains that, despite his one-sided retelling of the story, he committed no crime and no evidence existed that he had. I’m not sure that Raw Deal adds much to the conversation because how he came to have these fantasies, in this reader’s opinion, is irrelevant unless and until he commits an actual crime. It’s an interesting story and this book gives you the other side of the story, one that you didn’t hear beyond the sensationalism of the “cannibal cop.”
