Ange Hilstron has lived her life to the fullest. She had accomplished her dreams and in her old age felt as if she was 78 years old young. In later life, she feared the inevitability of a stroke. Her health was declining, and she knew it. Her family history was plagued with this medical condition, and she was left hoping for the best. On the 15th of December 2007, the inevitable finally occurred and she found herself in hospital being treated for a stroke. Rag Doll for Christmas by Ange Hilstron covers her journey to recovery from her stroke and how the medical system treated her while she was in their care.
Ange Hilstron's writing is captivating and casual, and reading this book was enjoyable. The story is not all doom and gloom, as it contains moments of humor, like her references to Battlestar Galactica and her Coppélia dancing idea. These moments made the book engaging. She sheds light on the incompetence and lack of care she experienced from health care workers. Nevertheless, she sounded grateful in her narration of the mistreatment, which was gracious of her as she did not display any bitterness or spite toward the workers. The poems at the end of the book are powerful and life-changing. In Rag Doll for Christmas, she has created a fantastic work, and I wish to read more from this author. I loved her optimism and the positive vibes she maintained throughout her recovery. This is an amazing book. Very inspirational. This attitude is what the world needs today, a message of love for our oppressors and a brighter view on life.
