Learning about nature is fundamental for developing skills such as observation, curiosity, and empathy toward living beings. It also stimulates creativity and environmental awareness in children. As a writer and conservationist, Jannifer Powelson shares her passion for the natural world in Rachel and Sammy's Nature Notes: Rachel Raccoon and Sammy Skunk. She organizes the contents into three categories: Spring woodland wildflowers, Prairie and woodland edge plants, and Butterflies and other insects. In each part, she divides the plants and insects by color, making it easy to locate the information. Jannifer Powelson includes a delightful photograph and some basic information on each page, such as the common and scientific names of the species. This field guide will help young readers to learn more about the wonders of nature.
Rachel and Sammy's Nature Notes has visual appeal. The photographs are attractive and colorful, which reveals how beautiful nature is. The edge of each page indicates the color of the plant or insect it describes so that when children learn to categorize plants and insects according to their color and characteristics, they can develop critical thinking and analytical skills. Another aspect I liked is that all the descriptions include a fun fact. This is an excellent way to provide varied, exciting, and concise information. Jannifer Powelson does a great job of teaching children about nature in a fun manner. This book is a great way to motivate young readers to explore the natural world and discover the beauty that surrounds us.
