Put On Your Silly Pants by Daniel Klawitter is a fun and witty collection of poems for “children and very immature adults.” With everything from boogers to bullies and albino boys to baby brothers, there’s sure to be a poem in here that’ll strike a chord or make you laugh. I have a strong love of poetry, everything from T.S. Eliot to Dr. Seuss, and so I was delighted to read Put On Your Silly Pants along with one of my nephews. Both of us completely loved the book, with him occasionally breaking down into laughter while trying to read aloud some of the poems.
Put On Your Silly Pants is sure to become a favorite in your household for both kids and parents alike! While the majority of the poems are lighthearted and silly, Klawitter also tackles a few more serious subjects, such as the importance of appreciating teachers, staying young while you can, and the magical power of books. In addition, the language is easy enough that older children will have no issues reading it on their own, and younger children will be able to read aloud or along with you with perhaps only a few pauses for assistance. Notable favorites include “A Monster in My Broccoli” which is about just what the title suggests, “If I Were Edgar Allen Poe” which touches on a few of Poe’s stories and the literary devices that he utilizes, and “It’s Okay” which is a poem that reminds children that having feelings and emotions is natural and completely okay.
