Puppy Pickup Day: The Little Labradoodle Book 1 by April M. Cox begins with all seven puppies waking up happy to see a new day because they know they are all going to get a new home. They are excited and ready and they go off to play. The tug with a rope game is too much for the smallest pup in the group, and jumping and catching the ball is also too much for the little pup. He falls off the slide with a big thump and the other doodles think he is too small. While sitting under the tree, he sees some rabbits and he thinks they are like him. He runs, chases, and plays with the bunnies without the label of being too small. Then he realizes that he is lost and he has to get back because it is the puppy pickup day. Will he be able to get back in time and find his new family?
This is the first book in the series and children will be waiting to read more books about the adventures of the little pup. The illustrations by Len Smith are vibrant and they breathe life into the characters, giving a good pace and movement to the story. The author weaves a lot of good messages through the story – friendship, compassion, perseverance, kindness, love, helping, and counting - which make it an engaging tale. The lovable pup, the rhyming words, the lively illustrations, and beautiful messages make it a perfect story for classroom storytelling time and read aloud sessions.
