Puck Farkinson's: A Parkinson's Memoir by Mike Justak is inspiring. It is not easy to live with Parkinson's disease. As Mike says, “Parkinson’s sucks.” He also explains that Parkinson’s is a movement disorder. It’s a progressive neurological disorder that has no cure. Its symptoms include tremors, stiffness and rigidity, loss of vocal volume, loss of balance, memory problems, cramped handwriting, and an unsteady gait. Despite these symptoms, Mike lives an inspiring life that he shares in Puck Farkinson's. The book is written in the format of short articles. Mike shares stories about his family and work before his retirement, his diagnosis of Parkinson's, and thereafter. He then shares his post-retirement work, which included the production of an enchanting holiday light show. In the final half-dozen articles, the author gives sound advice on how to cope with Parkinson's.
I was personally touched by Parkinson's over a decade ago when I first started writing books. One of my loyal readers had Parkinson's, which eventually robbed him of his ability to communicate. This is why I have a special sympathy for those who suffer from Parkinson's. From reading Puck Farkinson's, I gather that despite the disease, Mike Justak lives his life with humor, optimism, passion, and exercise, even though one in two people with Parkinson’s suffers from depression. This is why Mike’s life is so inspiring and Puck Farkinson's is such a motivational memoir. The book is filled with many inspiring stories that are easy to read. For those who want to learn more about life with Parkinson's, this is a recommended read.
