Promotion Protocol: Unlock the Secrets to Promotability and Career Success by Kim Nugent is a non-fiction book on strategies to achieve promotion and success from an employee perspective, and also how to hone and coach employees from a managerial perspective. In Promotion Protocol, Kim talks first of all about her own career trajectory and her own leadership and management positions in multiple industries in which she has worked. Coming from this background and with first-hand experience, Kim then breaks down the content into short chapters that cover topics such as the modern day workplace, understanding yourself and “why” you want a promotion, truly looking at one’s own strengths and weaknesses to find out if one is ready for promotion, tips and strategies to get promoted, working with managers and supervisors for effective coaching and feedback, and then short chapters on Kim’s advice and techniques to improve one’s brand, how one presents to the external world, the right attitude and opportunity, etc. Throughout the book, there are many self-assessment tools provided for readers to complete and learn from.
Promotion Protocol: Unlock the Secrets to Promotability and Career Success is an excellent book and Kim’s own credentials are impressive. I liked that she leads by example, and is someone who is qualified to teach this subject. There are a lot of factors that go into a person's chances of promotion and it was good to actually read some case studies of different people. The writing is very engaging and to the point, and makes the subject even more interesting as a result. The various assessment tools are a nice touch, along with the list of references at the end for people to refer to and learn more. This is a must-read for people who are serious about truly wanting to get ahead in their careers and reach management positions.
