Smitty's life has been relatively boring and predictable since he almost lost it two years ago. Unfortunately, that is changed in an instant in Promise to a Dead Man by L.Z. Smith, when an old Chinese bartender he was representing at a union hearing dies in his arms from a gunshot wound. Pete's last words to Smitty involve the promise to watch out for his niece, Mai-ling. Another surprise awaits Smitty when he meets the lovely young woman and they fall into a steamy love affair and embark upon an even more intense run for their lives. Secretly involved with a Chinese government problem, Mai-ling can't shake Smitty, who intends to uphold his promise to Pete - the dead man - even if it means he will end up dead himself. Can love survive the circumstances Smitty and Mai-ling find themselves in? Can they even survive at all? Follow the action and join the pair in trying to figure out who the good guys really are.
Political intrigue, murder, narrow escapes from death and a hot romance are all part of Promise to a Dead Man by L.Z. Smith. Written in a smooth, flowing narrative, the action is non-stop, the questions keep piling up and the answers seem farther away at each turn as Smitty does everything he can to try to protect Mai-ling. The story is thoroughly entertaining, keeping you on the edge of your seat, giving you a glimpse into a different way of life with different priorities. Will Smitty and Mai-ling end up on the same page? This is a very enjoyable book - compelling story, strong characters and plenty of action.
