"Pretty Dolls" by author and award-winning English teacher, Kimberly Dana, is a children's story about love, friendship and jealousy. This book reminded me of a combination of the movies 'Mean Girls' and 'Toy Story'. In "Pretty Dolls", young Tasha sleeps snuggled up with her favorite doll, Gracie, whose missing arm and disheveled hair are fodder for three other dolls in pristine condition perched high on a shelf. Each night when Tasha falls asleep, Emily-Nicole, Lilly-Kate and Chloe-Anne make fun of Gracie's shortcomings through mean spirited rhymes. But a twist of fate puts Emily-Nicole in harm's way. Her two friends turn against her and only Gracie has the heart to help and befriend her. The two become best friends and overcome the barriers caused by difference and jealousy.
This imaginative book has a very professional look and is enhanced by wonderful illustrations by Kurt Jones. It is an easy read for children and delivers a powerful message in a fun and understandable way. This is an excellent book for helping children learn how to deal with jealousy and embrace the differences that make us all unique and special.
