Pleasant Dreams, Sweet Puppies! by Linda J. Trust reminds children that there are puppies of all different sizes, shapes, and colors. There are big puppies, small puppies, and even tall puppies. There are puppies with floppy ears that bounce when they run “and others have short ears that point towards the sun.” Puppies do all kinds of fun things: some swim, some sunbathe on the warm grass, some steal hot dogs off tabletops, and some just love to run and chase sticks. All puppies are fun-loving and full of energy, but at the end of the day, they’re plumb worn out. The one thing all puppies do the same is they all “love to snuggle in their beds when day turns to night.”
Linda J. Trust’s picture book Pleasant Dreams, Sweet Puppies! is a sweet story for the very young. Full of color photographs of puppies of all shapes and sizes and colors, the simple rhyming text points out many differences between them, from looks to energy level and activities. There is one distinct similarity in that they all love to snuggle in for a good sleep at night. The rhyming verse makes the story lyrical and fun as young readers learn about the diversity between puppies. The simple language and repetitive words and phrases will help young readers work on their reading skills. As the story winds down and all the different puppies snuggle down for a good night’s sleep, the lulling repetitions will (hopefully) lure young readers to snuggle in for their good night’s sleep as well. Loved it.
