Persephone is the exciting first book in the intriguing Daughters of Zeus series by Kaitlin Bevis. Other than living with her strange name, Persephone believes she lives a typical life for a teenager. She goes to school and spends her days with her best friend Melissa, daydreams about meeting her rock idol, Orpheus, and works after school in her mom’s flower shop. Her worst problems so far have been dealing with bullying from Rachel and the other popular girls at school. That is until she starts getting the feeling that someone is watching her and strange people start warning her of danger. Soon Persephone finds out that she is more important and different than she ever could have imagined. Her life is forever changed after she is inexplicably attacked by Boreas, the god of Winter. Hades, god of the Underworld, saves her by marking her as his wife and pulling her into his domain. In order to stay safe, Persephone must live out the winter months under the protection of Hades. Things may not be so bleak, however. The Underworld is a happier place than she ever could have imagined, and Hades is nothing like she thought he would be. Although dark and brooding, he is also kind, compassionate, and quite handsome. While marriage is little more than a contractual bond to most of the gods, Persephone can’t help wondering if there could be something more.
Persephone by Kaitlin Bevis is a delightful and entertaining young adult novel. Fans of classic mythology will be thrilled to see a plethora of recognizable characters — Cassandra, Charon, Thanatos, Orpheus, and many more. It was a wonderful reading experience for me as an avid reader of mythology to see the unique ways Bevis gives new life to these classic stories. There are many recognizable themes and plots with modern twists and lots of surprises. I highly recommend Persephone, and I am waiting impatiently for Kaitlin Bevis’s sequel to this tale.
