Perils of a Pregnant Sleuth by Dershie McDevitt commences as professional biologist Callahan Banks debates whether to marry the father of her child, John Culpepper Dade III. Callahan is interrupted by Harry Applegate who is desperate to tell her how the triplets discovered a body buried in the floodplain. The crime is reported to the county sheriff, Cole Hunnicutt, who begins to investigate a drug connection. Callahan is wading through the mud when she discovers a second body, Chalmers Redpath. The doctor puts Callahan on bed rest, but vultures circling over Dark Pond lead to the body of Robbie Pasquini. Despite all these challenges, Callahan is under pressure to respond to Pepper’s proposal. Will the women’s “Roundtable” or the triplets' detective agency succeed in unmasking the killer?

Perils of a Pregnant Sleuth by Dershie McDevitt is a great piece of ‘chick-lit’ as well as a mystery story. The author skillfully interwove characterization along with clues throughout the narrative. I enjoyed the humorous accounts of Callahan’s discomfort during pregnancy, which would gain the sympathy of every female reader. I liked the way she was forced to get to know the other women, even though she did not like all of them. Some of the acquaintances developed into supportive friendships that surprised me. I enjoyed the way the mystery was developed and solved, with a distinction between the incidents that made the plot credible. I appreciated the special and natural birth scene, breathing a sigh of relief when there were no complications. The book incorporates romance, murder, puzzles, and much more.
