Wycliffe was born in the island of Nevis, West Indies, the son of Mrs. Margery Tyson and Samuel Tyson. He grew up to middle class parents and lived on the island until age fifteen. His mother immigrated to the U.S. after his father died, and brought him, along with three other siblings. In his story he tells of his upbringing on the island, life in the U.S., adventurous experiences while serving in the military, merchant marines, his mental obstacles, and desire for a higher education. This work will intrigue the reader.

"Overcoming Shadows from a Child" by Wycliffe E. Tyson is an inspirational book of his true life events and his soulful journey along his own path. Born on the island of Nevis, which is located in the West Indies, Wycliffe grew up with many hardships and extreme difficulties as a young man. He had to endure the death of his father at a young age, was bullied in school, suffered through molestation, was depressed and also rejected by his peers. He knew at a young age that there was a certain heaviness in his head which he later found out to be a form of mental illness. He would have to battle with this mental illness for the rest of his life, while trying to figure out how to achieve his life-long dreams and goals. Wycliffe moved to America, joined the U.S. Navy, Merchant Marines, traveled around the world, was hospitalized for mental illness, and desired a higher education. This is his true story that starts in Africa and brings him around the globe to find his identity and passions in life.
Wycliffe E. Tyson does an amazing job writing his very powerful story which is inspired by his own journey in life. The cover of the book is shadowed and mysterious, just like his courageous story. It is a very short book that does get to the point, but I found myself being disappointed that it wasn’t longer and wanted to know even more about Wycliffe’s journey. I really hope that he writes a follow-up book and I will absolutely love to read it. He reached into my soul and touched my heart with his struggles, hardships, passion and love for life. The underlying mental pressures were always there, but he was determined to overcome them and show the world that he had an important destiny to fulfill. Included in this wonderfully written book are his three short poems too. I found the poems to be very unique, truly inspiring and I really loved how they captured the essence of what he was experiencing firsthand. Wycliffe embraces life with its true wonders and challenges, believes in himself, and certainly does not take his life for granted. We all have internal struggles in life and this is a powerful book that we can all relate to in some form.
