Author Biography

Pedro Vasquez, a self-published novelist, is also a former US Navy Sailor and screenwriter. He began writing movie scripts after retiring from the military in 2012. His favorite past times are going to the movies, listening to all sorts of music, and reading–not necessarily in that order. When he’s not traveling the world, he likes spending time with his family, whom he adores. And he does travel often; he enjoys flying so much, that he once got on twenty-seven flight-segments in just thirty days! Pedro spent the first several years of his naval career working as a jet engine mechanic, after which he “crossed ratings” and became a translator. A polyglot, besides English and Spanish (his native language) he also speaks basic Albanian and Indonesian. Next on his list of languages to learn is Mandarin.

One Hundred Places by Pedro Vasquez is a realistic fiction novel that would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adults and adults who enjoy bucket list novels and special needs characters. John Peter has Asperger’s Syndrome and has spent his life being sheltered by his mother, Lily. However, when Lily dies, John’s whole world is turned upside down. In a short space of time, John goes from being sheltered to having only a bag of cash, the book "100 Places to See in the USA Before You Die,” and an old station wagon to his name. Inspired, John decides to set off on a road trip to see all of the places listed in his book, but along the way he finds himself drawn into adventure. Will John Peter finish his road trip around the United States, or will gangs, drug addicts, and law enforcement see it ended early?

One Hundred Places by Pedro Vasquez is a well-written book with an interesting premise that kept me entertained during the entire story. I really liked the fact that the book "100 Places to See in the USA Before You Die” was a gift from Lily to John, and that John decided to go on the road trip to honor Lily’s wish of him seeing the world. While John was most certainly the main character and I really liked him, however, my favorite character was his mother, Lily. I just loved how Lily did her best to care for John and that she did everything she could to set him up for life, such as teaching him how to drive, even if it did take a long time. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading any future books written by Pedro Vasquez.
