Once Upon an Enchantress by Hermione Lee tells a fantastical tale of good versus evil, bringing together humans, fairies, werewolves, mermaids, and more as differing sides fight for leadership and power. The main character Sharon, with her boyfriend Samuel and their friends Cynthia, Marcus, Sidney, Felicia, and Maisy set off on an adventure, trying to keep the peace at their school and home, Chelvicerra. Along the way, they encounter a snow giant and a mermaid and are betrayed by one of their own before they have the chance to face the Vanquishers and their leader Icarus. A great battle takes place amidst treachery and loss but Sharon and her allies stand strong. After the battle, Cynthia advises Sharon on a final way to bring peace to her community. Sharon responds and makes sure to take the necessary steps to keep the peace for many years to come.
Once Upon an Enchantress by Hermione Lee is a lively story that is full of adventure. I liked the main character, Sharon, because she is spunky, intrepid, and enthusiastic. She also is willing to do what she needs to do to keep her friends and community safe. I loved the theme of many different types of beings working together to serve the greater good. The author does a great job of showing real human emotions in her characters and allowing the reader the time to figure out what is happening in the plot. Young adults will like the action and the energy of this book and also appreciate the strong characters who make bold and brave choices.
