On the Train to Carrigban, written by Sophia Wellbeloved and illustrated by Michal Chaichman, is a delightful story about a young girl’s journey to visit her Aunt Sara each Wednesday. Each Wednesday, the young girl is placed on the train by her mother and on this train she meets Mrs. Shawl. Mrs. Shawl begins to share stories with the young girl and this passes the time, keeps her occupied, and also instills the love of stories in the young girl. Each week she looks forward to her time with Mrs. Shawl and, at times, is telling parts of the stories as well. Mrs. Shawl teaches the girl that there are stories everywhere and all the time.
Sophia Wellbeloved has done an excellent job with On the Train to Carrigban as I felt like I was on the train with the girl and Mrs. Shawl. I could picture myself sitting in a boxcar telling and listening to stories with them. The illustrations by Michal Chaichman also enhance the text as the illustrations are well done and add so much to the story. I love the time that Mrs. Shawl invests in the little girl's life each Wednesday by spending time with her, looking out for her, and sharing stories with her. I loved the message from Mrs. Shawl, letting the girl know that as soon as she listens to herself, others and/or things, then she will create stories. This book is well-written, will hold a child’s attention, and inspires the telling of stories and using one’s imagination.
