Oliver’s Hunger Dragon is a children’s book written by Sherry Alexander and illustrated by Amy Rottinger. Oliver has a dragon whom he’s never seen; the dragon’s name is Hunger, and he rumbles and grumbles for food. Oliver’s embarrassed by his noisy companion -- no matter where he goes, Dragon’s grumbles are way too loud. One day, a friend at school tells him that he has a dragon too, and they decide that they’ll share their food to try to satisfy their dragons. Then Oliver learns of two other kids with dragons and meets other kids, who don’t have dragons, but are willing to share their food with the kids who do. By pooling what they have together, the kids make a difference.
Sherry Alexander’s children’s book, Oliver’s Hunger Dragon, teaches children who have enough to eat that other kids are hungry, and shows those children who are hungry that they’re not alone. The story is simply and beautifully told and is never preachy or didactic. Alexander's approach is pragmatic and non-judgmental, and I think the dragons convey her message in a positive and affirming way. Amy Rottinger’s illustrations are wonderful! Hunger and the other dragons are marvelous creatures who seem genuinely attached to their human companions. Oliver and the other kids are likewise beautifully rendered. Oliver’s Hunger Dragon has serious subject matter that’s treated in an inspirational and uplifting manner. It shows how kids can get involved in solving a serious and ever-present problem by sharing what they have. Oliver’s Hunger Dragon is a great tool for raising kids' awareness of hunger and is most highly recommended.
