In No More Tears (A Town Without Pity Book 1) by Sandy Appleyard, two people held back by crushing grief find their way to each other through unexpected events. The book begins with a thrilling scene involving a case of theft that leaves Laura Warner, owner of Kelsey Ranch, without a lead hand to help her run the ranch. Determined to put his past behind him, Grayson Thomas leaves El Paso for Huttonville, a small town just outside Dallas. He responds to Laura’s job posting and gets the job. Both remain guarded initially, but later begin to bond over their tragic pasts. Still, Laura is hesitant to believe that what they share could grow into something more than just friendship.
The main characters in No More Tears are well-defined and likable. Laura is straightforward, tough, but also down-to-earth. Grayson is intent on building a better life than the one he left behind in El Paso. Secondary characters are funny and supportive of Laura and Grayson. The story is brief and only scenes that help move the plot forward are retained which makes the story exciting and entertaining. Some surprises are also included which makes the story engrossing. I also loved that it is set on a ranch, an idyllic background for the story. The ending is abrupt, though, and many questions are left unanswered. No More Tears by Sandy Appleyard also explores other themes apart from love including friendship, hope, and healing. It is a lovely contemporary romance novella with intriguing characters.
