Nine Nights Djerba by Alexis Debary is set in June 2002 in Tunisia. Eighteen-year-old roommates Stephanie Watson and Tina Morningstar are visiting Djerba, Tunisia, leaving behind their hometown in Brighton, England. Monica and Tariq, her field scout, are undercover agents posing as tourist guides to uncover which elements had turned a lorry driver into a terrorist and discover the mastermind behind the 4/11 assault. Both report to Mr. Schultz who runs T.R.O.Y., an international espionage network with a clearly defined legal mission. It collaborates with different national agencies around the globe, amongst others with the BND, the C.I.A., and MI5. When one of the girls is found murdered, the case is assigned to Djerba’s Police Chief, Achmed al-Benni. Monica decides to do her own investigation and uncovers top-secret information, putting herself in danger.
Nine Nights Djerba is a thrilling, suspenseful story jam-packed with action, crime, and espionage. Author Alexis Debary includes many of the unusual ceremonies and occult rituals which she has personally witnessed. The detailed information, facts, and data are well researched and woven into the story through the lives of the many characters. The novel is filled with vibrant imagery of the various locations and events portrayed in the story. Alexis has an interesting writing style, fast-paced, descriptive, and most entertaining. I especially enjoyed all the historical, cultural, and political information which adds an educational aspect to the book. Nine Nights Djerba is a fantastic novel, highly recommended to all adults and deserving of a place on every bookshelf.
