Mystic Invisible is a young adult fantasy novel written by Ryder Hunte Clancy. Monte Darrow is a fifteen-year-old mystic, who alongside his family, moves to his ancestral home in Fort William, Scotland, due to his father's work in the International Mystic Bureau. Their arrival in Scotland coincides with vicious attacks by cat-siths on norms (non-magic people) and mystics alike, leading to the disappearance of the IMB official Brian Shaw. Meanwhile, during a stroll with friends in the Hibernian field, Monte and his friends Finn and Cameron are attacked by a bunch of hooligans that leads Monte to lose control and unleash his dormant powers upon them. To make matters worse, Moira Bryce, Uncle Jarus's old partner and lead investigator in the Brian Shaw case, arrives to inform the group that the banished monster Nuckalavee is once again on their shores.
A coming of age tale soaked in Scottish folklore, Mystic Invisible is a highly entertaining and adventurous ride that you don't want to stop. Inspired by Scottish mythology, author Ryder Hunte Clancy creates a wonderfully whimsical world filled with mythical creatures such as cat-siths, Nuckalavee, unicorns, and many more. I couldn't help but draw some parallels between norms and mystics, and muggles and wizards of Harry Potter. However, the similarities end there as Ryder Hunte Clancy's world feels highly original and authentic. The narrative flows smoothly like melted butter, and the plot keeps moving at a steady pace. The relationship between Monte and his friends and family was my favorite aspect of Mystic Invisible. I particularly enjoyed the banter between them. I would recommend Mystic Invisible to young adults.
