Bella’s best friend was her dog named Ollie. The two grew up together and meant everything to one another. As Bella grew up, Ollie grew older, and eventually, he passed away. Not understanding what this meant, Bella was heartbroken. Everything reminded her of her furry best friend, and yet he wasn’t around anymore. What hurt the most for Bella was realizing that she would never see Ollie again. That was when her parents told her that he went to heaven and she would be able to see him again. My Dog Went to Heaven reminds us that even though Ollie wasn’t there with her, Bella could take comfort in knowing that he was up in heaven running around free and that someday they would be together again.
I’m not going to lie, I cried so hard while reading My Dog Went To Heaven. It made me think of my dog Ben who passed away last year and Bella’s sadness was something I could relate to. We don’t deserve dogs and the fact that they don’t have long lives is even more heart-breaking. If I feel so strongly as an adult woman, I can’t imagine what it would feel like for a child. As an adult, I understand my grief and why losing my dog was so upsetting. For a kid, they would be confused as to the emotions they are feeling as well as knowing and understanding the finality of death. I think Lindsey Coker Luckey has done a wonderful job in creating a book specifically for children when it comes to coping with death. The main character was very credible and the passing of an animal is an event that many people have experienced. What makes the book even more relevant are the amazing illustrations. It’s a book I recommend.
