My Days in the Beast by Aamir Al-Mamoura is The Diary of a Holy Warrior in America. Al-Mamoura is a radical Islamic Muslim who kept a comprehensive diary of his time and his activities in the US. All the while he was there, he was preparing for a major attack. A minor accident in the car park of a motel in New Jersey led to his capture before he could put his plans in motion. Deleted documents and photos were recovered from his laptop after his arrest and these revealed that for some weeks before his capture he had been sending data on potential targets to a clearing house. His diary revealed everything, including the time he had spent teaching others about explosives. This is the first time that such information has come to light; no doubt it won’t be the last.
My Days in the Beast: The Diary of a Holy Warrior in America by Aamir Al-Mamoura is a real eye-opener and not a very pleasant read in terms of subject matter. I believe it to be fiction, but, at the same time, it is incredibly real, too real to be honest, and it will make any reader realize just how easy it is for extremists to infiltrate us. None of us knows who anyone truly is and, hard to believe as it may be, these people are scattered around us, living their lives with an outward sense of normalcy while, behind the scenes, they are planning deadly attacks. The writing was clear and concise, the addition of the Arabic pages added a true sense of reality to the story, and the way it is written provides us all with a clear understanding of what goes on. I like the way it was written in diary format; it made it easy to follow the timeline of events. A good, well-written book, very insightful and worth a read – it might just make us all a bit warier!
