Dad jokes can be very punny! My Dad’s Jokes are Very (Terribly, Awfully, Painfully) Bad! by Jacob Eckeberger is a metafictive picture book. We are introduced to a kid who tries to warn us about his dad’s propensity for telling jokes that are real groaners. His dad strolls into the picture and starts sharing his jokes. Each time Dad gets started with another one, his son warns us not to laugh because it will only encourage more joke-telling. The jokes keep coming until finally the son breaks down and starts laughing. However, he is determined that when he becomes a dad, his jokes won’t be so terribly, awfully, painfully bad.
Jacob Eckeberger’s book is a real hoot. My Dad’s Jokes are Very (Terribly, Awfully, Painfully) Bad! will be a kids' favorite. He has captured exactly how kids feel about their dads' jokes. Secretly they love them, but they try to act like they are not funny. Eckeberger has included some jokes that I’ve not heard before; the jalapeño joke made me laugh out loud. Keith Zarraga has captured the essence of a hip but nerdy dad in his illustrations and the emotions of his son are spot on. Be prepared because after reading this book, kids (and dads) will want to tell you their own hilarious “Dad Jokes”. My Dad’s Jokes are Very (Terribly, Awfully, Painfully) Bad! is a book to have on hand whenever you want to laugh out loud or roll your eyes. It’s an excellent choice for all budding comedians.
