Mountain Mutts: Joy’s Tale is written and illustrated by Julie Stephens. Spring and Winter are dogs who spend all their time together. They loved to play, go to the river, enjoy treats, and take naps together. Winter died, leaving a feeling of empty sadness with the family that had loved her so much. After some time had passed, a puppy was brought into the house. Joy wanted to spend time with Spring, doing the things that all puppies loved to do, but Spring was too heartbroken from Winter’s death. Will Spring ever find happiness in her home again? Will she warm up to Joy and make her feel welcome in the household? How will the family move forward after such a painful loss?
I enjoyed how Mountain Mutts: Joy’s Tale highlights how our pets affect us in so many ways throughout their lives and our own. This story will help children learn how to cope with death and the grief that comes with such an event. I enjoyed the personalities of the dogs and the natural interactions in the story. The illustrations are gorgeous and bring the story of these beautiful dogs to life. I recommend Mountain Mutts to all readers who love animals as well as those who have faced the loss of a pet that they love dearly. I do hope that Julie Stephens will write more stories like this to help young kids cope with some of the situations they will face as they grow up.
