More Snapshots? From My Uneventful Life is a non-fiction memoir written by David Aboulafia. Each of us has our stories, memories that define who we were at some point in our lives and that helped to make us what we are today. Aboulafia sees them as snapshots, frozen moments from the past, and he's gathered them in both this collection and his first one entitled: Snapshots From My Uneventful Life. Some of his snapshots are funny and others present a kind of justice that everyone has probably, at some time, wished they had the courage to impart. Still others pay homage to his parents and friends who are now departed.
David Aboulafia's non-fiction memoir is filled with the author's signature flash non-fiction micro stories. I loved the first book in the series and wondered if Aboulafia would be able to sustain the energy in this sequel. I'm pleased to say that he did indeed. While this book focuses more on his adult life, there's still the youthful exuberance and wacky sense of humor evident in much of what he's shared here. He begins with a bit of culinary nostalgia -- date nut bread in a can, something that most have never even heard of while the rest of us try mightily to forget it ever existed. His story of the cream cheese and date nut bread sandwich squished in a bag with a can of Scotch Ice is funny and gross and poignant all at once.
As I read of his stint as house-husband and father/law student, I cringed at the thought of that non-stop shrieking in stereo and had to seriously wonder how the author managed to keep his sanity while studying law, which itself is an insanely rigorous activity, and raising a colicky infant. But my favorite piece in this volume would have to be Death By Whatever, which chronicles the author's adventures in Key West and the Everglades, a boy's last jaunt and bid for freedom before getting married -- think carnivorous horseflies, toothy barracudas, and our hero blissfully asleep on a beach known to be frequented by alligators.
In Aboulafia's introduction, he mentions that some of the readers of his first Snapshots book asked for more, and I will confess to being one of those benighted souls. I'm glad I did. The author's tales continue to enthrall, bemuse and outright entertain. His writing style is conversational and smooth, and loaded with quirky surprises that jump out when one least expects them. More Snapshots? From My Uneventful Life is most highly recommended.
