Lauren Tortora’s children’s picture story book, Monsters on My Mind, is a spunky tale centering around a little girl with a big imagination and what that kind of imagination can lead to. Sometimes it leads her to fun, and sometimes it leads her to fear. Toward the end of the book there is a fun little extra activity for young readers to participate in. The illustrations, also created by the author herself, are bright and colorful, enhancing the story line and dialogue within. They have a cartoon-like appeal that engages young readers. The narration style is very youthful and straightforward, creating an atmosphere of comfort.
Monsters on My Mind by author and illustrator Lauren Tortora is an exceptional children’s book with a spunky story line that seemed very original to me. I especially enjoyed the illustrations of the imaginative snapshots, reminding me a bit of the instant Polaroid camera film that I loved as a child. This is the type of book that I feel many readers will appreciate because, although the language is simple, it is direct, and I don't feel as though it is talking down to young readers in a way that is too cutesy, as some children's books can be. If you are looking for a book that will capture the imagination of your own child, and talk to them at a level that is positive, I recommend getting this book. It is sure to be a big hit with the entire family.
