Mommy in the Crazy Corona World is a humorous social issues picture book for adults written by Tanya L. Mahller and illustrated by Bhumi Loupito. Moms are having an awfully rough time navigating the world as transformed by the coronavirus. It’s one thing for some dads who simply have to get up in the morning, have breakfast, and go off to work. Many moms, on the other hand, not only have to take care of the little ones too young to be sent off to school but also become the teacher, hall monitor, and Mom to those kids who would normally be in school every day. And while they’re busy taking classes via Zoom, they still expect snacks and entertainment while school breaks occur. What’s a mom to do when it seems every moment of her day is taken up with cleaning, stopping arguments, and becoming a math whiz able to answer the most esoteric new math questions posed to her by her kids? Self-care. It’s crucial that she figure out how to provide self-care, as everything revolves around her ability to make it all work.
Tanya L. Mahller’s Mommy in the Crazy Corona World provides some comic relief and exploration of common ground for those women who somehow ended up becoming teacher, nanny, housekeeper, and non-stop companion for kids during what seems to be an endless pandemic. While penned and with artwork normally associated with children’s picture books, Mahller’s work is definitely geared towards moms and designed to provide them with a few laughs and reminders that finding a peaceful corner in the closet with a glass of wine and a good book could make all the difference in the world. Bhumi Loupito’s illustrations work quite well in making this picture book for caregivers do its job. I love the cartoon feel of the artist’s panels which follow an exhausted mom as she navigates her day. Those illustrations also make the book a perfect storytime book for reading aloud to kids who are still too little to realize the book isn’t really for them -- it’s for Mom. Mommy in the Crazy Corona World is highly recommended.
