"Mischief and Mistletoe" is a delightful collection of eight Regency romances by distinguished authors who call themselves the Word Wenches. These stories all center around the Christmas holidays. In the first story 'She Stoops to Wenchdom' by Mary Jo Putney, the main character Lucinda "Lucy" Richards accompanies her best friend Chloe and Chloe's titled father, Sir Geoffrey Bridges, to a December holiday party at Roscombe Manor. And who should appear at this party but Captain Geoffrey Kenmore who captured Lucy's heart many years ago when he was tutored by her father, a vicar. In the last story in "Mischief and Mistletoe", author Susan King writes of Cristina Shaw, daughter of whiskey runner Johnny Shaw, who as a young girl hides in a box bed with her younger brother, Patrick, protecting him as authorities raid their home. Years pass, Johnny is dead, Patrick is in jail and who should Cristina meet but the new viscount and sheriff, who was "Ned", the man who saved Cristina and Patrick those many years ago. Warning to readers: the six stories in between these two are just as sumptuously well-written and romantic!
"Mischief and Mistletoe" is an excellent collection of short stories which offer good plots, nice characters and great writing. The women writers who comprise the Word Wenches have created a book well-worth owning. Not your typical kiss and kiss again Regency romance; each of these stories offers a really good storyline with believable characters. "Mischief and Mistletoe" is a neat story collection that could be slipped into holiday stockings everywhere.
