Milly’s Magic Quilt by Natasha Murray is a charming children’s story about adventure and faith in magic. Milly is willing to give up her comfort blanket now that she is six so that her mother can use it as part of a new quilt for Milly’s bed. The new quilt is magic – just choose a square, wish to be where the material from the square came from, and be whisked away for an adventure! Milly’s pet rabbit, Patch, needs some convincing. And so the two are transported into a world of princesses when Milly chooses the yellow patch with sparkly spots on it. The princesses, one of whom is wearing a dress made out of the sparkly material, need their help with learning how to behave nicely. Milly knows just what to do. But can she and Patch work out how to get back home again once their mission is complete?
Milly’s Magic Quilt is a gentle and imaginative story, well written and the right length for emerging readers or for bedtime or other story times. The characters are likable – even the naughty princesses who are, after all, just having fun. Young children will empathize with Milly’s previous need for her “baby blanket” and her belief in magic. I love the idea of a young child’s comfort blanket being turned into something more exciting, and parents could easily use this sensitive idea as a means to encourage their own little ones to begin to give up outgrown comforters. Natasha Murray is both author and illustrator of the book and the simple, light and colorful illustrations complement the story well. They give the opportunity to explore the plot as it unfolds, prompting questions and discussion as the story is shared. This is a warm, well-written story with plenty of magic, humor and, of course, a happy ending.
