If you are looking for a historical book about Germany, World War II, America's involvement in the conflict, Hitler, and his compatriots, Midnight Flight to Nuremberg: The Capture of the Nazi who put Adolf Hitler into Power by Marcus A. Nannini is a good start. The book follows the biographical account of C-47 Pilot/Instructor, First Lieutenant Harry E. Watson Jr. It is not a general overview of the war, leaving readers to delve into Harry's life as a pilot. We follow him on droll missions, like milk deliveries, and learn how something so simple evolves into something far more dangerous in a war zone. There are also events that people don't always consider, like taking home prisoners of war (POWs), that this book covers. Further, readers also get a glance at the life of those at home, waiting for their loved ones to return.
Midnight Flight to Nuremberg was truly eye-opening. Reading an account of someone involved in World War II is always interesting, but reading an account of someone's involvement in capturing someone as influential in WWII as Franz von Papen was even more astounding. There was an overwhelming amount of detail in this book for history fans to enjoy, and I truly felt like I was sitting next to Harry as he went through his ordeals. The use of pictures only added to this feeling, increasing context and realism for readers. While author Marcus A. Nannini could adjust a few minor considerations for clarity, many should find this a well-researched and well-written book.
