Michaela’s Miracle by A. D. Stowers is a bittersweet love story that will have readers reaching for the nearest box of tissues. Michaela has had her share of heartbreak and disappointment over the years. After losing her parents at a young age and with no relatives to take her on, she ended up in foster care until she graduated from high school and was then promptly kicked to the street and told she was on her own. After a failed marriage and ongoing health issues, Michaela is shocked when a man walks into her life who can truly teach her what love, commitment, and faith are all about. Like Michaela, Alex has had his share of heartbreak with a former wife who was beset by serious mental issues. When he meets Michaela he knows he has met someone who is not only beautiful on the outside, but that has a heart full of love and is a warm, compassionate, and giving person. Everything seems perfect for this couple but lurking in the background is something tragic that will test the depth of their love and ultimately define the remainder of their lives together.
It is not often that a book can bring this tough, world-weary man to tears but I’m not ashamed to admit that Michaela’s Miracle is one such story. For his debut book, author A. D. Stowers has perfectly captured the intensity, power, and drama of Michaela and Alex’s love story but has also infused it with such tragedy and heartache that the tissues do need to be within reach when reading it. What I particularly liked about this relationship was the openness and sheer joy that Alex and Michaela expressed and showed to each other. Their trust in each other and their feelings was refreshing and beautiful to read. Hard as it was to read some of the sad chapters of the story, it was equally uplifting to understand the ability of this pair to enjoy the moment and to take great pleasure from everyday, mundane activities and to enjoy them specifically because they were doing them together. This is a powerful, incredibly sad, yet also deeply inspiring and uplifting read and one I enjoyed immensely. I commend the author and look forward to more novels from him. I can highly recommend this read.
