“Mice in My Tummy” by Andrea Houdek is a clever little tale of 5 year old Sami Rae, who thinks she has mice living in her tummy, because every time the teacher calls on her she can feel them running around in her tummy. Sami Rae had a friend named Sarah in her kindergarten class, with whom she liked to play. Sami Rae and Sarah were also in a ballet class together. One day their dance teacher told them they would be performing a recital for their parents. They would get to dress up and wear costumes! It was going to be fun. But on the night of the recital, the mice in Sami Rae’s tummy started running around again! Sami Rae looked at Sarah, and noticed she had a funny look on her face. Sarah reached over to hold Sami Rae’s hand, because Sarah noticed Sami Rae also had a funny look on her face. The teacher came over to see what was wrong. Sami Rae whispered “There are mice running around in my tummy” and Sarah whispered “There are butterflies flying in my tummy.” The two girls looked at each other in surprise, while their teacher told them the feeling was perfectly normal, because they were just a little nervous about performing for their parents. She assured them it happens to everybody.
This book is a cute story for kids. It starts out purely as entertainment. However, the real value of this book is a series of “Word Activities” at the end. Kids are first entertained with a cute story, but then they are taught about “vowel” sounds, fill in the blanks, rhyming, and simple word search activities. The author has put together an enticing combination of fun and education. Educators have long known they can only teach a basic amount at school. Parents should do the bulk of the teaching their children require. Books like this one will make the parents’ job more formal, and easier. I recommend this book for everybody with children aged from 3 or 4 to 6 or 7. This is exactly the sort of mental engagement children need, if they are to succeed in life. Help out your youngsters, and get this book for them. You will be doing them a great favor.
