Meet February by April Martin is an educational children’s picture book about a little girl called February. February and her trusty pet groundhog embark on a journey to teach young readers about the exciting month of February, from the very special Black History Month to the most eagerly anticipated Valentine’s Day! February is filled with lots of ideas to surprise her friends with, but when Valentine’s cards she has made disappear, she has no idea where to begin searching. So, with the help of her friends and family, along with Shadow the Groundhog, she begins searching for the unique gifts she has made for her special friends.
Meet February by April Martin is an excellent educational children’s story that teaches children the different months of the year and what each month entails. I loved how racially diverse the characters in this book are, giving every kid from all over the world the opportunity to feel included when reading this series. I also loved how historical facts are slipped into the story, bringing more educational value. We learn the importance of lending a helping hand and teamwork. An exercise at the end of the story enables young readers to reflect on what they have just read, which sums the book up nicely. The recipe included is also a unique feature, which can be a great bonding activity for parents and their children. Last, the illustrations are beautifully done, the entire book feels cohesive, and the color palette is soft and pleasing.
