McSkeeter McNoid is the biggest, meanest mosquito at the lake. No one - not Lindy the pink turtle, Roux Rabbit, Chumly the raccoon, Sweet Pea Possum, or any of the other myriad denizens of the lake - is safe with McSkeeter McNoid flying around and attacking at random intervals. So, as all sensible creatures do, the animals form a plan to do away with the menacing pest. Little do they know that the smallest among them, a little frog named Tommy Two, will hold the secret to their success in the most unexpected way imaginable.
McSkeeter McNoid, written and illustrated by Michael Verrett, is an enchanting and powerful fable for children, with a twinned pair of moral object lessons: sometimes the least heroic among us can accomplish the most heroic things, and teamwork leads to amazing (if unexpected) results. Michael Verrett's story is both charming and educational and his illustrations are expertly rendered in vivid colors and an imaginative cartoonish style that makes them appear as if they are stills from an animated feature film (which this story would convert to rather nicely).
McSkeeter McNoid by Michael Verrett would be a perfect conversation starter for story time. Adults wishing to teach children about teamwork and celebrating individual strengths while working together for the good of the whole community will have to look far and wide to find a better springboard for discussion. An added plus is that the characters behave in predictable ways based on their anthropomorphic personality types, teaching children not to rush into judgment based on external appearances because every personality has something unique to contribute to the community. McSkeeter McNoid is an ideal children's story for family, youth group, school, or individual reading.
