Maya Knows a Secret (Shhh.) by Daniel Georges explains to young readers what a secret means. Maya asks her dad what a secret is and he explains it to her. He tells her that when someone tells her something and asks her not to repeat it to anyone, it is a secret. Maya is excited. She wants someone to tell her a secret but no one seems to be interested in telling her one. She finally meets a shop owner who tells her a secret but she accidentally repeats it to her friend. She not only learns a lesson but realizes that a secret is only a secret if it is kept a secret, and she also understands the importance of thinking before speaking.
The author handles the concept of a secret wonderfully, making it interesting to young readers. In addition, he also teaches them the importance of thinking before they speak. These two topics have been woven into the story deftly, making it easy for children to understand the concepts easily. The illustrations are adorable and colorful and they bring the characters and the scenes alive for readers and make the concept palpable. The topic is fresh and original and it is a great story for read aloud sessions in classrooms and bedtime storytelling. The story is simple but satisfies the curiosity of children when it comes to understanding the concept of a secret, and Maya makes it easy for them to understand it perfectly.
