Max and the Isle of Sanctus is the second installment of the Secrets of the Twilight Djinn series by John Peragine. Max Daybreaker and the crew of the Spice Pirate ship, Saucy Pig, barely escape from Arctus after the Ice Palace is laid under siege by ice giants from the north. Determined to heal his mother from a deadly curse, Max flees aboard the Saucy Pig alongside Captain Cinn and his friends with Prince Abad and the Spice Guild in pursuit. Along the way, he reunites with old friends, battles sea monsters, and navigates tricky shapeshifters. After conversing with his friend Sal, Max becomes convinced that his parents are at the Isle of Sanctus. But everything is not as it seems, and Max must be wary of the Twilight Army and the Djinn.
Author John Peragine's action-adventure odyssey transports you to the stormy seas full of larger-than-life pirates, sea monsters, temperamental gods, and powerful magic. At times, Max and the Isle of Sanctus is like the book version of the Pirates of the Caribbean to fans of the movie franchise. Swashbuckling action, witty dialogue, and an engaging plot make this a thoroughly rewarding reading experience. The characters are colorful and full of life, with distinct personalities that make compelling character arcs. The narrative is filled with reveals and unexpected turns that you never see coming. Despite being the second book in a planned trilogy, Max and the Isle of Sanctus also functions as a standalone fantasy adventure novel. Recommended to kids and young adults.
