Author Biography

Mary Patterson Thornburg has lived in California, Washington, Montana, Indiana, and again, finally, in Montana. She was educated at Holy Names College, Montana State University, and Ball State University, where she then taught for many years. Thornburg writes mostly in the genre that some people call “science fantasy,” within as wide a range as possible, but almost always with a bit (or a lot) of romance. She believes that genre fiction – written for the pleasure of all readers in our literate world – can be every bit as serious and as important as so-called “literary” fiction, and that its genres often and increasingly provide the best vehicles for exploring life in its readers’ times. Her literary heroes are Mary Shelley, who gave us all a metaphor for technology alienated from its creators; Ursula K. Le Guin and Octavia E. Butler, inventors of worlds that shine their powerful searchlights on this one; and Stephen King, who persists very pleasingly in being Stephen King.

Luke Blackmon's Rose: A Love Story is a work of fiction in the time travel and interracial romance subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Mary Patterson Thornburg. In this charming and heartfelt tale of love across time, we find ourselves following the story of Rose and Luke. Widowed and conflicted, Rose doesn’t believe that love is for her until she meets the enigmatic and mysterious Luke, and sparks truly fly. But Luke has his own conflicts to deal with, not least the fact that he’s been ripped from his own time and now lives a meaningless existence. But perhaps these two lost souls can find meaning in one another…

Author Mary Patterson Thornburg offers a concise romantic drama that is perfectly paced for a quick read on holiday or a rainy afternoon. I loved the immediacy of the drama and how easily we are pulled into the plot. The relationships between the characters and the close, emotional portrayal of both Luke and Rose make the novel feel so realistic that even the time travel elements blend into the storyline with total credibility. I also found that the work took a unique viewpoint on interracial romance and portrayed Luke’s journey in a particularly focused, empathetic, and insightful manner, and I genuinely feel like I learned a lot about other people’s experiences in life as a result. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Luke Blackmon's Rose: A Love Story to fans of romantic dramas, speculative fiction, and cross-cultural tales filled to the brim with emotion.

Luke Blackmon's Rose is a sci-fi romance novel by Mary Patterson Thornburg. When Rose Spencer, an assistant professor of English at a university, visits the home of one of her non-traditional students, Kingsley Harris, she meets a man who will change the course of her life forever. Luke Blackmon was a talented actor and singer in 1930 who, while rehearsing for a play in a theater in New York City, suddenly found himself transported to the 21st century 90 years later. Abused and kept as a prisoner by the Agency, Luke was finally allowed to visit his great-granddaughter, Mira, Kingsley's wife. Feeling an intense mutual attraction, Rose and Luke begin a blossoming romance. With their lives marked by violence and chaotic events they have no control over, do the two lovers have a future together?

Luke Blackmon's Rose is a moving tale of love triumphing over hate and bigotry. Mary Patterson Thornburg has written a captivating story full of romance, drama, and intrigue. With a slight tinge of science fiction, the narrative takes you on a romantic odyssey that sheds light on crucial and relevant social issues, such as racism, gun violence, and corporate greed. The author paces the plot well, using character interactions to drive the narrative forward. Rose and Luke's relationship is the heartbeat of the story. Both main characters come from very different backgrounds and have well-defined personalities that lead to some great chemistry between the two. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book, and if you love romance novels or stories with poignant commentary, you will too!

Luke Blackmon's Rose by Mary Patterson Thornburg is a love story with a paranormal theme. Two years after the death of her husband, Rose meets Luke under the strangest circumstances. Luke Blackmon, a black actor born in Jim Crow America, an era synonymous with racism and bigotry, finds himself vanishing from the theater stage and appearing in the modern 21st century. The experiment comes from the Agency's scientific advances and probing. Coming to grips with this reality, Luke and Rose battle to find trust and love in a world that has changed dramatically since the early 20th century. Although change has occurred, the remnants of prejudice and hate remain to a great extent, and it takes much courage for the lovers to find their place in a world that can seem unforgiving.

Luke Blackmon's Rose is a powerful tale that explores themes like trust and hope. The characters are passionate and incandescent in their love, making for explosive and thrilling situations and dialogue. Mary Patterson Thornburg has a special knack for describing finer details, making the story immersive and the characters authentic and lifelike. The characters are well-defined, and I was drawn to most of them for different reasons; this stems from their varying yet strong personalities. The plot is solid and believable and the twists and turns kept me intrigued until the end. Attention to detail, a fiery and passionate cast, powerful themes, and a thrilling yet dreamlike finale make Luke Blackmon's Rose a tale worth remembering.

In Luke Blackmon's Rose by Mary Patterson Thornburg, Luke Blackmon was in the theater, practicing a play called The Dark Fancy, when he was brought across time, against his will, from the 1930s to the present. The agency that holds him is very powerful and manipulates Luke for a long time to use him for their own gain. Mira, who happens to be Luke's great-granddaughter, works for the agency, and after a while, the agency releases him to her care. They make Mira give him a prescription that ensures Luke is kept subdued, but after some time she stops following their instructions. Kingsley, who is Mira's husband, brings Rose to their house. The meeting between Rose and Luke is magical. How will things evolve between them? Will Luke get justice for what was done to him by the agency?

Luke Blackmon's Rose by Mary Patterson Thornburg is a must-read! The plotline is highly unpredictable, combining both romance and time travel. I also loved other themes explored, such as racism and tolerance. Another thing that caught my attention was the idea of an all-powerful agency that can control even scientists. It got me thinking about the existing mega-corporations in the world today and how they might influence governments and policies across the globe. The author also used suspense to great effect, and the vivid descriptions of the events and emotions of the well-developed characters helped create a mental picture of what was happening. The narration was perfect, and I can't wait to read something else by this author.
