Loving Her Mind by Cecile Bibawy is a captivating story of someone on the outside dealing with the schizophrenia of another. We get Bibawy’s own personal struggle with this illness as her mother is tormented by paranoid delusions. You are enveloped in a story that deals with manipulation, humiliation, and stigma as the family is torn apart by this illness. You read how Cecile’s faith is tested, how her childhood is shaped and almost destroyed by her own mother. You cannot help but tear up at the personal things that Cecile shares with you, how her life is an open book and you are invited to read it. This is a book of courage and determination, and how we see mental illness in general. You can feel Cecile’s struggle with depression, shame, and her fight to save what is left of her life. She doesn’t hold back and even has advice on how to approach this disorder and find herself in the process. Loving Her Mind will take you deep inside a world we rarely see.
I found this book to be brutally honest. Cecile Bibawy doesn’t hold back when she tells her story in Loving Her Mind. It is a story that I know many people, including myself, can relate to. Whether you are suffering or you have someone in your life suffering from a mental disorder, this book doesn’t hide anything. This is a helpful book, with a positive spin on mental illness and the battle to find herself among the ruins of her childhood trauma. A must-read for anyone suffering from or supporting someone with a disorder. I found her faith very prolific; it is the cornerstone of her survival and it shows how much influence her father had on her which makes this story so much deeper than I expected. I found myself lost in her words. Loving Her Mind is so much more than just a story; it’s a tool to help others in her position.
