In Love, Maggie: The Case of the Missing Scooter by Rae Marsh, Maggie attends her friend Cammie's birthday party. Cammie receives a scooter, sparking Maggie's jealousy. And then, Cammie's scooter goes missing. Maggie and Cammie search for it, and they are told, simply but somewhat suspiciously, that it was moved. But what were those strange buzzing noises? And how on earth did it go from looking brand new to its not-new-looking current state? Maggie suggests investigating further, which she does while also juggling familial discord—her mother's reluctance to let her have a scooter. Despite this, Maggie remains determined to uncover the scooter mystery just as she is starting fourth grade, which comes with its own mixed bag of highs and lows.
Rae Marsh gives us a lively and relatable main character with young Maggie in The Case of the Missing Scooter, bringing us into Maggie's world with an enthusiastic tone and a first-person perspective. There are lessons to be learned on jealousy and why parents make some decisions that don't always align with what a child wants. I found the writing style to be fun, and as it is actually Maggie herself writing, it came across as authentic for a child on the cusp of fourth grade. The drama, which falls realistically into the scope of Maggie's age group, has its occasional conflict balanced by relationships that are filled with warmth and humor. Maggie is easy to root for and I loved that she advocated for girls in sports and that she was willing to dig into Cammie's scooter mystery, despite her desperately wishing she had one of her own. Overall, this is a sweet, fun, and engrossing story appropriate for young readers, but hilarious enough for older folk to enjoy with them.
