The Fae & The Fallen by Brittni Chenelle is a captivating young adult urban fantasy novel. Set largely in the mystical Gifted Fae Academy, where 80% of the population possesses touch magic, the story follows an ‘ungifted’ protagonist navigating a world where power means everything and danger lurks at every turn. Drawn to Kaito, the academy’s most dangerous student and an old flame of hers, Reina discovers unexpected abilities of her own that suddenly put the spotlight on her in ways she had dared to hope for, but never really imagined would come true. This enemies-to-lovers tale is narrated by Lessa Lamb and Matthew H. Longoria in its audiobook format, immersing listeners in a fantastical fae tale of romance, mystery, and drama.
Author Brittni Chenelle excels in the emotional development of her central characters, and the split perspective allows readers to experience the story from different angles, enhancing the tension and building empathy for both protagonists and antagonists and giving us a more well-rounded and complex view of the politics at play. Reina is a brilliant central character with a lot of vulnerabilities, but a huge amount of strength and spirit, standing up for herself and others with close narration of her innermost thoughts to help readers connect to her. Kai’s narrative voice is distinctively different, offering a sharp, strong counter viewpoint, but with so much vulnerability in his painful past that you can’t help but root for him to succeed too. The blending of magic, fae lore, and urban fantasy creates a unique and immersive setting that feels rich and vividly imagined around these figures, inviting us into their world all the more.
In terms of its audiobook presentation, Lessa Lamb and Matthew H. Longoria each bring a distinct energy to the story that makes the reader feel deeply connected to the struggles and growth of the characters. Their narration is crisp and clear, always emotive and varied for each character, and well-synchronized between the side characters they describe together. Overall, I would certainly recommend The Fae & The Fallen for urban fantasy and romance fans everywhere to enjoy, and even more so in this immersive and exciting audiobook format.
