Mark Saha grew up in cotton country along the Texas Gulf Coast, earned a BA at the University of Notre Dame, and attended film school at UCLA, where a collection of his short stories won a Samuel Goldwyn Creative Writing Award and led to many years of writing scripts for film and television. Growing up in Texas he worked on a doodlebug crew blowing shot lines across the Big Thicket, drove a tractor hauling trash wagons at a cotton gin near Fairchild, and worked cattle on foot on his father's farm outside Sealy. He lives in Santa Monica, California.

Lost Horses by Mark Saha is a collection of stories based upon true-to-life human emotions and characters involved in situations that range from the heartrending tale of a college student suckered into a deal in “Wide River” to the humorous situational misdirection in “Why Men Cheat in August” and the philosophical story of a man who refuses to move a hundred-year-old horse water trough in the title story “Lost Horses.”
That Mark Saha clearly follows the old author directive to “write what you know” is apparent throughout the stories in his ability to fit specific stereotypical characters into storylines that reek of verisimilitude. The “write what you know” advice has since been overcome by the ease and depth of research capable through the internet, but for me, who grew up in Texas in the 60s and recognized many of the characters in these stories, it is clear that Mark Saha not only “knew” most of these characters, he quite possibly wrote himself into some of them. How much closer to reality can any author get?
The stories were all very well-paced, with enough twists and turns to keep the pages turning. My personal favorites are “Wide River” and “Why Men Cheat in August,” but all the stories are entertaining while simultaneously presenting events and situations that every reader of any genre will appreciate, enjoy, and reflect upon long after closing the book.
