Long Shadows: A Novel is a work of fiction in the paranormal, historical fiction, and interpersonal drama subgenres. It is intended for the general reading audience and was penned by author Abigail Cutter. In this emotionally charged novel filled with dark secrets and deep thoughts, we meet the ghost of Tom Smiley, a Civil War spirit who just can’t let go of his past. So when Tom meets the very corporeal and alive Phoebe Hunter when she moves into his house in the 21st century, so begins a unique relationship. One which will see both of them put their fears to rest, provided they can survive the revelations of the truth.
Novels that straddle both the historical and contemporary genres often have to sacrifice one of the two in order to be fully realized, but the case is not so with the excellent balance that author Abigail Cutter strikes. I felt Tom’s pain keenly, and his visions of his former life were vividly realized, yet his sensibilities lined up really well with the modern perspective and personal challenges which Phoebe faced. The plot is laid out and cleverly paced to let these emotional highs and lows take over from one another and keep readers engrossed until the stakes are suddenly ramped up very high indeed for a startling and very enjoyable climax to the tale. Overall, if you’re seeking a richly atmospheric and deeply engrossing drama novel with plenty of mystery and history, look no further than Long Shadows for your next read.
