Living at the end of an Oxygen Tube: Facts and Feelings by Susan MB Preston is a courageous tale in which the author explores her experience of living on oxygen. While most of us receive oxygen naturally, the author of this book does so through a medical procedure. In this memoir, she explores the highs and lows of her experience, at times leaving readers feeling as though her life was hanging by a very thin thread. It is the story of a very courageous soul, one who has accepted her condition and has learned to adjust, to adapt, and to find new ways of coping.
Told in a voice that is clear and humorous, the author explores the deeper meaning of life from a space of utter vulnerability, allowing readers to touch her deepest fears and to feel her struggles. She states: “There is no escaping the fact there is a learning curve involved with living with home oxygen therapy. The amount of time you need to use oxygen in a day, as well as your condition, will determine the effect on your daily life…” Besides sharing her personal experiences, Susan MB Preston offers invaluable knowledge to readers, knowledge gleaned from her intensive research into what it is like to live a life tethered to a machine. Readers will understand the changes that need to happen — in lifestyle, in the home, and in relationships —while living on an oxygen machine. The voice in Living at the end of an Oxygen Tube: Facts and Feelings is arresting, frank, and absorbing. The author brings readers into her worldview and allows them to connect with her intimately.
