Little Saci-Pererê: No More Mischief by Rachelle Jones Smith, illustrated by Mykhailo Ridkous, is the tale of a cute little Brazilian mischief-maker. Saci is a trickster, similar to a genie. He can cause farm animals to misbehave. He can steal socks, and create a whirlwind. He can also grant wishes. He likes sweets. He breaks pots. He likes quiet. This book is an introductory guide – telling readers how to behave if they encounter this creature. If you catch him, always free him quickly, but it’s okay to take his hat. If you do, he'll grant your wish. He can make you rich, and he can make you miserable.
It's always fun to encounter myths from around the world. Most countries have tales of mischief-makers and tricksters. The art in Little Saci-Pererê: No More Mischief by Rachelle Jones Smith captures the spirit of play in this spoiled child of Brazilian myth. The drawing of the tornado around Saci-Pererê as he travels gives a combined sense of both fun and danger. Other drawings show how adeptly Saci-Pererê can hide in order to trick people. His bubble pipe is a charming touch, blowing bubbles instead of smoke. The rhyming text tells the story of Saci-Pererê in such a way that he’s not the least bit scary. This childish bad spirit will be someone new to joke about or blame when things go wrong. Recommended for libraries in their multicultural section, or their mythology section. Children may ask for this story more than once.
