Liberty Man by Brad Livengood is a historical novel with beautiful elements of romance. Gabriel Brower is stunned when William Kinney, a soldier of the American Revolution and a man who is supposed to have died 150 years ago, suddenly appears in his living room. William begins to tell the story of his adventures in search of his one true love, Sallie. It is an adventure of love, a tale of an extraordinary longing, of war and the quest for true freedom. It is a story with strong spiritual underpinnings. The question that readers ask is: Will this man be able to finally meet the love of his life — again?
The descriptive power of the prose grips the reader from the opening lines of the narrative: "Gabriel wandered into the expanse of a vast deciduous forest, captive in every thought and reflex to its ageless, impenetrable silence. A deep, cavernous space, it was cool, moist to the touch, and magnificently suffused with thick, sweeping mists." A great opening into a novel is normal, but the storytelling craft of an author is tested by their ability to stay consistent and to fulfill the promise they make with the strong opening. Brad Livengood doesn't disappoint here. Brad Livengood plunges readers into a historical world that is exciting to navigate, allowing them to experience life and warfare in the 18th century.
Liberty Man is cunningly plotted, with surprises that readers will find delight in. The author creates a strangely familiar world, infusing it with realism, and creating companions that are deeply human and real for readers. In spite of the time difference and the extraordinary character of the story, readers are irresistibly drawn to the protagonist, a man who comes across as the epitome of the deepest human yearnings. This novel is a gem of a story, a must-read for fans of historical novels and any reader looking for a great story.
