A Christmas elf is assigned to a family to send an annual report to Santa in the comical family story, Letters from a Christmas Elf: Unexpected Humor For Any Season by Kurt and Kirsten Johnston. Santa has assigned his best and brightest elf graduate from elf training to a married couple, the Johnstons. Chaos and laugh-out-loud situations ensue. The Johnston family is almost more than one little elf can handle. Between moving across the country, to rapidly gaining new additions to the family tree, this little elf must compete with a house full of eight children and two very outnumbered adults. As part of his assignment, Santa's elf must also go on vacation, witness as the children and parents hit significant life milestones, and then send his observations in a report back to Santa. Can the Johnston family stay on the Nice List for the next eighteen years? Or will Santa's elf resign or ask for a new assignment?
Letters from a Christmas Elf by Kurt and Kirsten Johnston reminds families always to find the humor in any situation. With a large family full of diverse personalities, how can the Johnston family's antics not elicit laugh-out-loud situations? Coming from a family of six, I know that larger families have their fun times and their times of conflict. This book is a playful reminder to look at daily life with a healthy sense of humor. As with any family, conflict does arise, so one must know how to deal with it. As teens and young adults, we are quick to judge parents; our children will never do that! These parents are just doing it all wrong. Then, we become parents and discover that our children are really little monsters with an above average IQ, that are in fact sent here with one mission: to make us, as parents, look as stupid, impatient, and inept as possible for the next eighteen to twenty years. Lucky parents!
Although Kurt and Kirsten admittedly could have handled a few incidents better, this book is a refreshingly honest look at family life. The children may have been naughty at times, but Santa didn't lose hope in the family; he looked past their disrespect and smaller indiscretions and even looked forward to reading his favorite annual elf report. This book is a wonderful family read and I enjoyed it.
