Did Volkswagen’s CEOs, engineers, executives, managers, and other leaders know about the illegal defective software devices that were being installed in their vehicles? In Leadership Lessons From The Volkswagen Saga by Steven Howard, you will be educated on the various aspects of the leadership that Volkswagen provided during their emissions scandal. While at one point Volkswagen was the leader in the automobile industry, and won numerous awards from the 2015 Motor Trend Car of the Year to the 2015 North America Car of the Year, their luck drastically changed within the same year. Volkswagen was charged not only once but twice for violating the EPA’s Clean Air Act. The installed devices emitted more than 40 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxide (NO×). Steven Howard provides not only the history behind the scandal, but information about those who were chosen to take the fall for the violations. Leadership Lessons From The Volkswagen Saga by Steven Howard also displays the history of over fifty Volkswagen legal, criminal and civil lawsuits and findings since 2015. Leadership is crucial and where a company stands shows during times of challenge. What is done behind closed doors does come to light; ask Enron.

I enjoyed how Steven Howard provided a wealth of informative data about the Volkswagen saga. Each chapter provides the ins and outs pertaining to the scandal, from the impact on their brand to the financial costs. In Leadership Lessons From The Volkswagen Saga, you will see how aspects of the numerous levels of leadership within the Volkswagen culture trickled like a poison throughout the system. Did the company care that heavy concentrations of NO× causes a high level of respiratory illnesses or was their bottom line more important? The irony was that the EPA reported their findings much later to Volkswagen and allowed Volkswagen a delayed time to respond, so what part did the EPA actually play in this cover up? Was the EPA in Volkswagen’s pocket? If you have an interest in learning more about the Volkswagen scandal, then Leadership Lessons From The Volkswagen Saga by Steven Howard is the book for you.
