When God, disguised as a female, comes to earth, Nathan Andrews’ suicide plan dissolves in lieu of promises of great sex and a lusty existence. “Amanda” is the woman who can and will fulfill all of any man’s dream of the perfect mate. She is seductive, amazingly beautiful, witty, and perfectly innocent to the customs of earth. Nathan cannot get enough. Unfortunately with God on earth, heaven is now under the control of Lucifer. Angel Gabriel does all within his power to contain the ensuing chaos, but there is just so much the angel can do without God’s presence. With an underlying theme of corruption in existing world religions, Knowing God is, at times, a disturbing perspective of the humanity of God. While Lucifer is in charge of heaven during God’s absence, Nathan and “Amanda” bring to life a holy daughter. During the birth, Lucifer attempt to seduce Nathan over to his side with lewd promises, but Nathan redeems himself with loyalty to “Amanda”.
Knowing God by Donald Allen Kirch is not for the weak of faith. At times, I actually felt morally guilty while reading the story and then reminded myself that this is a work of fiction and that the story requires commentary based on actual literary content. Donald Allen Kirch is obviously a gifted creator of vivid description and effective sentence structure. With a plentiful amount of levity in amusing dialogue and unexpected plot twists, Kirch has successfully merged God with man. I feel obligated to attach words of caution, though, to religiously sensitive readers.
