Kit Wilson, RN by Beth E. White is the story of a young nurse starting her first year of residency after nursing school. Kit Wilson graduated from TSU and passed her NCLEX exams with flying colors. However, joining the Thompson Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse for her first year of residency didn't exactly turn out how she thought it would. Assigned under the mentorship of senior staff nurse Barb Mazer, Kit soon discovers that a lot of nursing involves patient needs, physician demands, communicating with other departments, and documenting everything. Apart from the workload, she finds that practicing empathy and compassion as a registered nurse is vastly different in real life. With the support of friends and family, especially her Gram, Kit is determined to get through her first year of nurse residency.
Drawing inspiration from her own experiences, Beth E. White tells a moving tale of a young woman learning what it means to be a nurse and navigating the trials and tribulations that come with the territory. Kit Wilson, RN is a celebratory nod to those healthcare workers who spend countless hours of their lives providing care for patients, sometimes at the cost of their own mental and physical well-being. As a nurse herself, White provides readers with an eye-opening account of challenges faced by new resident nurses. The characters feel like real people, and I especially enjoyed the scenes involving Kit and Gram, as well as Kit's burgeoning friendship with Amanda Milton. White also infuses the narrative with bouts of humor between chapters filled with heartbreak. In conclusion, Kit Wilson, RN is a realistic slice-of-life drama novel that I will highly recommend.
