Kit ‘n Kat: The Nose Knows is a children’s action book by Linda Steinbaum and Carly Alison. Kat’s summer plans are ruined when her stepfather Mark gets promoted. She, her mom and Mark move out of town into a spacious, but creepy old home. Kat is happier after getting a dog from the animal shelter for her birthday. She adores Kit, a cowardly puppy with a large nose, although his timid, clumsy behavior is ridiculed by others. He begins scent tracking classes to boost his confidence and Kat is enlightened as to why her puppy is special, especially his nose. The puppy soon proves how useful he is after accidentally knocking over a box of cookies that wasn’t ordered. Kat is surprised there’s a mystery connected to her house, but people are reluctant to discuss it. When a neighbor’s child goes missing, Kit and Kat join the search, but what they find along the trail baffles Kat, particularly odd footprints and set of keys.
You can’t trick Kit because his powerful nose knows, enabling him to identify assorted scents. This novella is narrated by Kat who shows sarcasm, stubbornness, wit, and anger. Her dislike of Mark is so obvious, but also realistic as adjusting to step-parents can be difficult. I also noticed how calm and levelheaded she can be when problems occur. Linda Steinbaum and Carly Alison created an adventurous story with an intriguing mystery regarding Kat’s house that still hasn’t been solved. I hope there is a sequel to Kit ‘n Kat: The Nose Knows because I am curious to learn the house’s secret.
